Maintenance is more than cleaning panels
Panel cleaning can help when dust or dirt is significant, but reliable solar operation also depends on cable condition, connectors, protection devices, inverter cooling, battery health, settings, and the way production changes over time.
Useful routine checks
- Look for heavy dirt, shading changes, damaged glass, loose mounting, or obvious panel damage.
- Inspect accessible DC and AC cabling for heat damage, looseness, abrasion, or poor routing.
- Check breakers, isolators, surge protection, earthing, and enclosure condition.
- Keep inverter air paths clear and verify that fans behave normally.
- Review inverter logs for recurring warnings, high temperature, grid events, or battery faults.
- Compare present PV production with similar days and seasons rather than relying on one instant reading.
- For batteries, review temperature, state of charge behavior, current limits, communication, and any BMS warnings.
When performance drops
A drop in production can come from weather, seasonal sun angle, new shading, panel contamination, string problems, connector faults, MPPT behavior, inverter derating, or measurement differences. The goal is to compare data methodically before replacing equipment.
Safety matters
PV strings can remain live whenever panels are illuminated, and battery systems can deliver very high fault current. Internal electrical checks should be carried out by someone who understands the system voltage, isolation points, and protective equipment.
